Chapter 12 Journal

My reaction to the end of the novel, Lord of the Flies by: William Golding was I believe Ralph cried at the end because he was extremely happy that after losing hope of ever being rescued they finally are. Ralph was also crying because the boys did not get to kill him or harm him in any way. I have gained great hatred towards Jack and Roger! I absolutely despise them because they have killed Simon, and Piggy. Piggy did not deserve to die nor did Simon! I would absolutely recommend this novel to a fellow friend because I feel it brings great aspects of human nature and what atrocious acts we are capable of.

Questions

1. Ralph decides that they must attempt to get back Piggy's glasses to make fire and ask Jack why he simply didn't ask for it.

2. In what ways are the twins "seeing Ralph for the first time" before going to Castle Rock?
Samneric wondrously examine Ralph and they realize that he is slowly but surely losing his civilization and the reason for the fire.

3. Why is the boy's attempt to get back Piggy's specs and get the other boys to maintain a signal fire bound to fail?
The boy's attempt to get back Piggy's specs and get the other boys to maintain a signal fire bound to fail because the boys have hope that if they reacquire the specs and maintain the fire again they will get rescued.

4. Why do you think Roger pushes the rock off the cliff?
I think Roger pushed the rock off the cliff to stop the arguing and secretly meant to kill Piggy to get rid of the conch so nobody will be on Ralph's side.

5. How is the destruction of the conch symbolically significant?

The destruction of the conch is symbolically significant because without it there is no order whatsoever, everyone is a savage now.

6. For most of the boys, what are the reasons they want a chief? What does a chief do for them? Most of the boys want a chief to have someone to show them what to do, if they weren't to have one they wouldn't know what to do.

7. What has led you to become so savage to the point where killing someone doesn't matter to you?
Did your parents treat you cruelly so your taking out your anger on others is that why you don't want to be rescued?

8. I liked it here at the beginning I thought we'd be able to stick together and stay sane while the adults rescued us but it's been the complete opposite. Jack hates me and my followers. They have came to the point where they kill without mercy. I'm scared one night they'll come and kill me or anyone that's with me.
They killed Piggy! The CONCH, PIGGY! They're gone, he's dead! I'm alone, there is no order, they're savages! I'm a savage. How is it possible, I cant believe this is actually happening. I won't be surprised if they kill me now, maybe its for the best.

Ch. 10 Common Core Questions

Ralph, Piggy, and Samneric all describe the night before very differently. Ralph describes the incident as a terrible murder. "Piggy" "That was murder" (Golding 156).  Piggy on the other hand describes the night before as an accident. "It was an accident," said Piggy suddenly, "that's what it was. An accident" (Golding 157).  Samneric don't really know what happened because they left early. "Yes. We were tired," repeated Sam, "so we left early. Was it good ---" (Golding 158).

Ralph describes Simon's death as murder and mentions that perhaps Simon was only pretending to be dead and still might be alive.  "'Piggy.' 'Uh?' 'That was Simon"' (Golding 156).  On the other hand, Jack says that Simon was disguised as the beast and the beast is still somewhere on the boat shaped island. "' The beast, might try to come in. You remember how he crawled. He came disguised. He may come again even though we gave him the head of our kill to eat'" (Golding 160).

With Jack placing an order to have Wilfred beaten, we may say that Jack's power has clouded his mind from simple human morality. "The chief was sitting there, naked to the waist, his face blocked out in white and red. The tribe lay in a semicircle before him. The newly beaten and untied Wilfred was sniffling noisily in the background."  Jack is the sole leader of his tribe, they all obey him due to the terror he bestows upon them. "The semicircle shuddered and muttered in agreement" (Golding 160).

Script:
Piggy: "It's come! gasped Piggy. "It's real!"
Ralph: "Did you get hurt Piggy?"
Sam: "We gave them something to think about"
Eric: "When I woke up one was kicking me in the face. I got an awful bloody face, I think, Ralph. But I did him in the end."
Jack: *walked quietly and stole Piggy's glasses and lead the boys to attack them
Roger: "Have you found them?" (Follows Jack and attacks other boys)

5.  Ms. McCaughey concludes her commentary by recommending: “The best Ebola strategy is to protect our local hospitals, health-care workers and patients by relying on the nation’s bio-containment facilities. That’s what they were built for.”

I honestly do agree with the author because we don't have to put other people at risk while there are these clinics where they could be properly cared for.

My parents have the same mentality, they believe people should stop being selfish and simply understand it is in the best interest.

Knowledge Post

Dictionary Definition: Facts, information, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject.

My Defintion: Something that you enjoy doing without anyone telling you to do so. The thirst to want to know more, to understand what surrounds you and how it works.

Outside of school I gain knowledge by surrounding myself with books and poetry. My room is like my chamber of knowledge, I have a library of books ranging from mysteries, biographies, collections of poems, etc. I gain knowledge by enduring each book and what it has to offer. Continuous acquisition of knowledge is important because our earth is changing daily varying from technology, science, our society etc. If we stop acquiring knowledge we would simply become like an outdated book, useless.
