Knowledge Post

Dictionary Definition: Facts, information, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject.

My Defintion: Something that you enjoy doing without anyone telling you to do so. The thirst to want to know more, to understand what surrounds you and how it works.

Outside of school I gain knowledge by surrounding myself with books and poetry. My room is like my chamber of knowledge, I have a library of books ranging from mysteries, biographies, collections of poems, etc. I gain knowledge by enduring each book and what it has to offer. Continuous acquisition of knowledge is important because our earth is changing daily varying from technology, science, our society etc. If we stop acquiring knowledge we would simply become like an outdated book, useless.

Opinion Editorial

Which is more important: hard work or talent?
In my opinion I believe talent is more important than hardwork. I believe this because without talent you aren't motivated to work hard. If you really love something you will work hard for it, whatever it is. If you are a hard working person but have no talents you're pretty much bound to something you may not like doing, whereas if you're talented you have something to look forward to everyday, hence why I believe talent is more important than hard work.

Joy Luck Club Essay
Period 3
“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal” Richard Puz.  In the book The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, a realistic fiction novel the main characters An-Mei Hsu, Lindo Jong, Ying-Ying, Suyuan Woo, and June differ in their ideas about love and family. Each difference of the generations manifests itself in the way each generation deals with issues such as marriage, divorce, and child rearing.
In the novel, The Joy Luck Club the mothers of the girls have a different perspective on love and family.  The daughters in America are free to do things that their mothers disapprove of.  “More than thirty years later, my mother was still trying to make me listen.  A month after I told her that Ted and I were getting a divorce, I met her at a church, at the funeral of China Mary, a wonderful ninety-two-year-old woman who had played godmother to every child who passed through the doors of the First Chinese Baptist Church”(Tan 187). This quote indicates, that Rose Hsu’s mother highly disapproves of her daughters divorce, the mother believes in always being with her husband, whereas she doesn't she simply isn't happy anymore.  Rose used to believe everything her mother used to tell her but one day she decided not to.
Secondly, Suyuan lost her two twin daughters in China where the city was destroyed by war. “She didn't even pause to think.  She simply said in a way that made it clear there was no more to the story:  “Your father is not my first husband. You are not those babies”’(Tan 26).  This quote shows that Suyuan is still hurt that she lost her her two babies.  Suyuan’s wish is to find her two daughters but her wish is unfulfilled when she commits suicide to liberate her daughter from shame and unhappiness. This shows the love Suyuan has towards her daughter. Adding to that, June is informed by the ladies of the Joy Luck Club where her two sisters are and must follow her mother's will and find her two sisters. June greatly differs her mother because she is stronger than she believes, whereas her mother was weak, filled with superstition and love for her daughter.
The generations differ because the mothers look what is best for their daughters and their family.  “I know now that I had never expected to find Bing, just as I know now I will never find a way to save my marriage. My mother tells me, though, that I should still try”(Tan 130). The daughters on the other hand believe in what is best for them and their happiness. “But if you bend to listen to other people, you will grow crooked and weak”(Tan 108) This quote again shows that the mothers want the best for their daughters.

In Conclusion, the generations have different ideas on love and family. Suyuan shows her love towards her daughter by killing herself to save her daughter from shame and a miserable life. Adding to that, Rose divorces her husband despite what her mother thinks which completely goes against her mothers views. The generations are different because the daughters are more modern than their mothers. The daughters see that men are not superior than them.
